Brit shrugged. “Interesting reading material. Not all that surprising, given we are standing inside a church.” She regarded the place, frowning. “Sort of…”

“‘No one was strong enough to subdue him,’” Gina intoned quietly, regarding the body with a hand over her mouth. “‘Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.’”

Took a beat until it dawned on Elijah.

“Cuts?” Brit said. “Like on the body?”

“Sweet mother of Melchizedek…” he whispered, then glanced at Gina. “This strikes at something from our days at the Bureau, doesn’t it?”

“I don’t know…” Gina said, taking a breath. “There is a darkness to it, an edge of the supernatural beyond the wickedness of murder itself.”

The trio stood in silence for the longest time, the scene making not a lick of sense.

“I need to get inside!” someone pleaded from behind with a raised voice.

Then again, more insistent, enraged even: “Let me through!”

Elijah spun around toward the voice. He spotted flailing arms trying to muscle their way through two burly police officers blocking the entrance. Couldn’t tell who, but looked important.

So he made for the commotion.

Hoping for answers to an inexplicitus case straight from hot Hades itself.
