Rory and Kane were the first chaperones to arrive at the school for the winter formal. It was “Winter in Paris”-themed, so the gymnasium was decorated in white-and-blue-colored streamers and fabrics, with a faux-crystal chandelier hanging from the center, in a sad attempt to look somewhat sophisticated. Rory thought the only Parisian thing about it was the hors d’oeuvres if frozen foods from Costco counted.

Kane wore a simple suit and Rory wore a basic black cocktail dress and brown trench coat, not wanting to outshine the students but still fit in. They did this together every year; while they had their work cut out for them, Kane enjoyed the free food and Rory enjoyed Kane’s company. They started the evening making sure their students came in sober and strait-laced, with only a handful of students having to be turned away—something Kane took note to check on the next time he went on patrol as Hematite.

“Do you think anything is going to happen tonight?” Rory asked Kane, once the crowd was mostly inside. “With all the vigilante stuff going on?”

“I hope not,” Kane said. “It would blow if Stone Breaker got a bunch of kids wrapped up in it.”

She did a great job of putting on a cheerful show for her students to act like nothing was wrong, taking photos with students when asked. But Kane could see the tightness in her shoulders and the way she was fidgeting with her thumbs when they’d watch the students along the gymnasium wall. To anyone not paying attention, everything was fine. But if you looked at Rory long enough, you could see the increasingly rapid rise and fall of her chest through her cocktail dress and how quickly she’d glance around the room. She was on high alert, and Kane was positive he was the only one who noticed.

“Hey,” Kane whispered in her ear. “I know I’m no Hematite, but if anything happens, I’ve got your back, okay?”

Rory looked up at Kane and smiled. She saw no hint of joking in his expression, but that he was being dead serious for once. She nodded and said, “I know. Thanks, Kane.”

The DJ interrupted them. “We’ve got a request from your senior class president. It’s Lil Nas X!”

But Lil’ Nas X didn’t play. A lightning bolt sound effect rippled through the speakers. Kane saw Rory’s brows furrow and lips slightly part.

“Bon soir, Riverpeak High School. How’s your winter formal going?” The distorted voice was undoubtedly Stone Breaker’s. “I believe someone here is helping Hematite. Now’s your chance to give yourself up. I—.”

“Sorry about that, folks,” the DJ said, as he cut the message off. “I don’t know how that got in my playlist. I’m making sure it’s gone now. That must have been a mistake.”

But Rory knew it wasn’t a mistake at all. She looked up at Kane and saw that he was already looking at her. She felt a lump in her throat as she said, “We gotta get out of here.”

Kane just nodded. “Come on.
