“Betty—”

“Bernie! What happened to you?” Betty jumped to her feet and went over to help her twin to the sofa in her office.

He knew he looked a sight—he felt every one of the cuts and bruises on his face, and he couldn’t remove his hand from his ribs because it was the only thing giving him a bit of relief.

“Let’s take you over to the hospital. Geez, Bern. What happened?”

The hospital would be no help to him. Nothing would, except for Betty to send Nash away. “You have to get rid of him.”

“Who?”

“Nash. He’s trouble.”

“He’s just writing an article. How is that trouble?”

“He’s a SEAL. He’s investigating us.”

Betty straightened and stepped back. “Did he do this to you?”

“No. I’m just saying, you’ve got to tell him to leave.”

“Well, he’s not a SEAL anymore. He’s just trying to find his place in the world. This whole town is doing that. Why can’t he do that here, with us?” She stared at him, then frowned. “What’s really going on, Bernie? What have you gotten into?” She closed the door to her office. “Who told you he was a SEAL?”

Bernie shrugged. “It’s town gossip. Everyone knows.” He got to his feet. This was not good. He didn’t know who Travis’ informant was, but Bernie had been warned not to go running to his sister. “I gotta go.”

Betty hugged him.

He leaned close and whispered, “Bad things are afoot. If you love me, you’ll not ask questions.”

“I do love you.”

Just that. No promise to send Nash away.

“I mean it, Bet. He has to go.”

“Why?”

“Because he does.”

“Keep your enemies close, Bernie. If you suspect him of something, then having him near is the best thing.”

Bernie knew the inescapable truth was that he wasn’t long for this world. The sad thing was that he wouldn’t be given a respectable grave in the cemetery. No, his enemies would leave him to die out in the wilds, where all the others were dumped. If his bones were ever found, he’d be just another nameless headstone outside the sacred boundaries of the town’s graveyard.

Maybe he’d earned that.

But regardless of what might happen to him, he had to keep the evil he’d invited to town from harming his sister.
