Chapter 14

Robert was in his element. He had two dishes in the oven, the smoothie was done, coffee was almost ready to press, and he was busy chopping zucchini while the oil was warming up in the pan. He’d already prepared the bed table, covered it with yellow tissues, and added a small bouquet of fresh herbs and anise stars, which he attached to small stems cut of celery to form mock-flowers. He was happy with how it turned out.

But would Ethan like it? Rob didn’t want him to wake up in an empty bed, and he’d already spent over half an hour downstairs preparing breakfast. No matter what he did, whether it was covering fresh strawberries with powdered sugar or chopping up veg, his thoughts kept straying to last night. It had been the most amazing night of his entire life. He’d been nervous but horny, elated yet it all felt so natural. Ethan had been sweet like the strawberries in the oven. A night such as this deserved a celebratory breakfast, but since he didn’t want to leave Ethan alone just to go to the farmer’s market, Rob had to make do with what he had at home. He hoped his new boyfriend would like it.

“Mmm, smells lovely,” he heard his mother’s sleepy voice behind him. He stiffened a bit but turned to smile at her. He had hoped she would stay in bed longer. Was she up so early because she wanted to ask him about prom?

“Hi, mom. How was work?”

Her hair was tied into a messy bun, and she was sporting plaid pajamas that looked far too large for her. “Long night. We actually had one student from your school with a concussion. I hope you were responsible?” She raised her eyebrows, but her eyes were still half-closed and hazy with sleep.

“You can press the coffee and help yourself. I’ll have breakfast ready soon,” said Rob and shrugged. “I didn’t drink, don’t worry.”

“Is there enough for three?” She gave him an expectant look and walked over to the espresso machine. “I hope you were responsible with more than the drinking.”

Robert cleared his throat, but his face immediately flushed with heat. “Um... yeah, I guess.”

“Come on, Robert, don’t make me tear it out of you. Who’s the girl? I wanted to check if you were back in the morning, so I got a flash of her hair, but I left. Obviously.” Mom pressed the coffee with a loud yawn.

Robert closed his eyes, took three deep breaths and tossed the chopped zucchini into the pan. The sound of sizzling was like cool yoghurt on his nerves. Great, so she thought he had a girl in. He swallowed and added some chopped almonds to the salad he was preparing. “Mom, I’m gay,” he said, raising his eyes at her. This was the third time within the last 24 hours he’d admitted to it... after not saying it ever before. Was that a sign of progress?

She stalled while pouring coffee and squinted at him.
