When I walked into the office the next morning, Iggy seemed agitated. “What’s wrong? Did you miss me that much?” I could only hope.

He spun to face me. “Sure, but that’s not the problem. It’s Sassy.”

“What about her?”

“She won’t leave me alone.”

“What are you talking about?” I knew very little about ghosts, and even less about animal ghosts, but I doubted she had the ability to stay around for very long. That would take a lot of energy on her part.

“When Jaxson and I arrived this morning, she was here.”

“In the office?” I asked.

“Yes, that’s what here means.”

“You don’t have to snap at me.” I couldn’t see or hear her, which frustrated me, especially since I was a witch. “Where is Sassy now?” I asked.

“On the sofa.”

“Which end?” I certainly didn’t want to sit on her.

“Left.” He pointed to what he called the left end.

As long as she was here, I might as well see what she knew. “Can you ask her if Mr. Hightower was allergic to nuts?”

“She can hear you, but only I can understand her answer.” Iggy faced the sofa. “No, he loved nuts. All kinds.”

Which was why he was willing to taste some. “Sassy, who visited Mr. Hightower in the last few months?” I imagine that when Sassy was alive, she was rather social.

Iggy hopped up on the coffee table and faced one end of the sofa. Now I understood what other people went through when I spoke to Iggy. He listened for a bit and then faced me. “Mostly Amanda and sometimes Darren.”

“What about Mr. Merriman?” The developer was murdered after Mr. Hightower. He could have killed Sassy’s owner, though she would have been in her ghost form by then.

Iggy waited, but this time his tail was thumping, a sure sign he was losing patience. He faced me. “Yes.”

“When was the last time she saw him?”

“She doesn’t remember,” he said, clearly not liking being a go-between.

“Anyone else visit while she was among the living?” I asked. It somehow seemed easier to ask Iggy.

“Mr. Plimpton came once or twice. But that was a while ago. He was trying to get her owner to sell the theater since Mr. Plimpton really wanted to get out of the ice cream business,” Iggy said, translating for Sassy.

That was consistent with what I’d already learned. “No one else? A neighbor perhaps?” I was desperate for a lead.

“Mrs. Elderberry,” Iggy said to me then turned back to his ghost. “Who’s she?” he asked Sassy. “Oh. She’s a neighbor, but she’s older than Mr. Hightower.”

She could have given him the nuts thinking they were safe. The issue with that was if she’d visited him that fateful day, Mr. Hightower would have used his delicate china tea set instead of manly mugs.

“Tell her thank you.”

Jaxson came up the back staircase. “Hey, Glinda.”

I turned to Jaxson. “I’m glad you’re here. I need to discuss something with you. And Iggy.”

“What’s up?” Jaxson asked.

I explained about my aunt being the black sheep of the family and why.
