Chapter Fourteen

As I waited for Tomas at the coffee shop, I wondered about the concept of curses. When I had walked into the Stanhope house there had seemed to be an oppressiveness in the air. The people had seemed worn down by it. With Johnny’s body gone, there seemed to be a lightness entering the people as if the discovery of his body had brought an end to something. What that something was, I didn’t know yet. But I had a feeling that it was going to be important that we find out. I just hoped it didn’t bring back the darkness.

My musings were interrupted when arms were flung around my shoulders and I was captured in a heartfelt hug.

“Trudie, it is so good to see you.”

Tomas Burnelli was one of the most effervescent human beings that I knew. It seemed strange that he also had a reputation as being one of the best funeral planners in Los Angeles. He let go of me and dropped himself into the chair opposite.

“What can I do for you today?” Tomas gasped and grabbed my left hand. “You’re engaged. Congratulations!”

He held my hand up to the light and studied the diamond ring intently. “It’s small but very good quality.”

I snatched my hand back. “Stop critiquing my ring. I love it.” I also knew from my future father-in-law that Griffin had agonized over getting just the right ring for me.

Tomas smiled. “I wasn’t being critical. It’s nice to see someone who doesn’t need to have a ten pound ring to flash around to prove their love.” He went to have a sip of his coffee when he froze, a horrible thought obviously crossing his mind. “Are you going to ask me to organize your wedding?”

There was a part of me that was tempted to do just that. The man had, before becoming a funeral events planner, been a wedding planner. Of course, that was before he had developed an almost pathological aversion to all things bridal. I could tell that if I asked him to plan my wedding we would be stretching the friendship maybe a little too far. I waited a few seconds before answering. It was always entertaining in these circumstances to prolong the agony.

“No.”

Tomas exhaled noisily.

“I’ll organize my own wedding, thank you very much. I asked you here for a different reason. I have a client who has asked me to organize a funeral for them. Very small, very low key.”

“No bigamy, no extortion?”

I did not appreciate the eagerness in his voice.

“Nothing like that.” I really hoped nothing like that would be coming up at Johnny Moretti’s funeral.

“So disappointing,” Tomas sighed, although he had a twinkle in his eye. Which showed he still hoped for something special.

Tomas pulled out his trusty notebook and started writing.

“Name?”

“Giovanni Moretti, but everybody seems to have called him Johnny.”

“Method of death?”

“Looks like he had the back of his head bashed in.” I lowered my voice when I noticed that people at the next table were watching us curiously.
