At a small trattoria on the outskirts of Capitol City, Ben stared over at Marcella. He planned to be civil, flirty even. But, damn, he kept picturing the hurt on Andraya’s face this afternoon.

“Benito, you’re off somewhere in your mind.”

“My mind is on you, lovely lady.” He could barely get the words out.

“I like hearing that. My mind has been on you since Thursday.”

He couldn’t say the same for himself, so he picked up the menu. “Shall we start with wine?”

She studied the list. “I see they offer a bottle of Attems Pinot Grigio. Let’s have that.”

A waiter approached them. Took their drink order and left.

“So, Signor, tell me about your life. Your family.”

“I live with my elderly father.” Gianna would hate him using that term. “And my two children.”

She glanced at his hand. “I hope you don’t have a wife.”

“No wife. Not for a long time.”

“Ah. The same for me, no husband for years.”

The wine arrived and they toasted to the evening.

Finally, they ordered. When his meal of seared salmon, linguini and asparagus came, it looked to be delicious, but to Ben, it tasted like cardboard. Still, they chatted, sipped the Pinot and he hoped she had no idea how miserable he was.

At the end, she said, “Would you like to come back to my house for a nightcap?” She reached across the table and grasped his hand. “Or…more.”

Hmm. How far was he going to take this?
