I don’t know what I was thinking. I mean, I know I wanted to impress Twyla, but I should’ve known better.

After I beat Lin, I was supposed to be done for the day. But on free day, Mr. Dennis let anyone who wanted to challenge one of the upper-tier players get a chance to battle. That way, everyone got a chance to level up, he said.

I should’ve just taken my win and gone home. But when Mr. Dennis asked who wanted to battle Deuce, I couldn’t help myself.

“I’ll do it,” my voice croaked out.

“You?” Deuce rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, me!”

“You ready to lose in front of everybody?” Deuce asked.

“What if you lose?” I asked, sticking my chest out.

“Set up the board. I’ll even let you go first.” His smirk was back.

I could feel Twyla staring a hole into the side of my face as I set the board up. I knew I should have just walked away, but Deuce did something to me.

I sat behind the white pieces and started with the same move I used in the game with Lin.

Deuce counterattacked right away.

Then I went to the next move I’d practiced.

Each time I slid a piece across the board, I felt Deuce’s confidence rise—and mine fall. I’d just been riding the wave of victory, and now I was about to drown.

I never got control of my strategy. The game was over.

Deuce won, but even worse—I’d lost in front of Twyla.
