I can remember one of Johnny’s drunken episodes while we were still in Texas. Norma was ill on the couch, as she had been many times since we’d left California. Though living in the desert had sparked our lives with rich experiences, a cloud of pain had begun to envelop Norma’s daily affairs. At times, her now all too regular migraines were coupled by days of illness and discomfort. At that age I didn’t know any different, and assumed they were part of that unknown world of “female conditions.”
