CHAPTER SEVEN

Maggie slept fitfully overnight, dreaming of large-mouthed fish hooked on giant lures coming after her in the water. Twice she’d sat straight up in bed, covered in sweat and dreaming about monster fish chasing after her. She padded down the hallway and checked the empty guest room, still not used to the fact that her son and grandson were safely nestled in a house of their own thirty minutes away.

Tonight, she wished for a full house again.

She ran a glass of water from the tap and took a few sips to help wash away any remaining dreams. When she woke up the second time it was just under forty minutes before her alarm was set to go off anyway. She decided to stay up and enjoy a cup of her own coffee flavored by the cinnamon syrup from the donut shop.

Josie, Naomi, and Myra had decided to drive to Hunter Springs to help out there for the day. Myra drove separately in case Lexi’s nanny needed for her to rush back home. Ruby informed Maggie that she would arrive at the Dogwood House a little before seven to begin preparing breakfast and had asked Maggie to be there around the same time.

It felt a bit like luxury, waiting so long to leave the house and taking her time with a cup of coffee in her own kitchen. She thought about rearranging the schedule to have an early morning or two off each week. Naomi had risen so quickly in her abilities that she could practically open the place up by herself and Myra could easily do the same, but with Lexi still so small, she had decided to take a step back from her ambitions to someday manage the donut shop on her own.

Maggie decided that she would bring up the subject of handing over more responsibility to Naomi to Ruby later on in the day. She figured both of them could use a morning off each week. In fact, Ruby had another cookbook contract to consider. Perhaps she would enjoy more time off as well. Maggie decided that if she could carve out more time away, she might even travel to Hunter Springs one day each week to help Bradley out until he was able to hire more help.

Just before seven, she loaded everything up in her car and headed across town to the Dogwood House for the second time in two days. Ruby’s truck was already parked in the back of the house near the large shed. Maggie carried the syrups and creamers inside in a large box. She could hear the cooking sounds as she walked up the steps to the porch.

“Good morning,” she said when she stepped inside the back door. “Where is everyone?”

“Still asleep, I guess,” Ruby said. She stood at the large counter in the middle of the kitchen cutting up onions and mushrooms. “I’ve seen Gretchen and Albert once each. Gretchen was not dressed quite yet so I think she’s in the shower now.
