Chapter Twenty-Six
It was anÂothÂer five days beÂfore we could leave. Paulineâs comÂmisÂsion from the vilÂlage inÂvenÂtor would take that long to finÂish, and she didnât want to go to MiÂhilit-dalath withÂout it.
We wanÂdered the vilÂlage or lounged about the inn by turn. I tried not to think about the waitÂing teleÂporÂtaÂtion cirÂcle. We left our arÂmour and weapons beÂhind, in spite of the threat of the OrÂder of the Third Eye. It seemed wrong to frightÂen the vilÂlagers.
OrÂdeth ofÂten acÂcomÂpaÂnied us, exÂplainÂing things about his home and his world. We talked a lot with him about Earth and the disÂarÂray of our arÂrival. He clarÂiÂfied some things for us, though othÂers reÂmained mysÂterÂies. ApÂparÂentÂly we were speakÂing MisÂtemÂbran, though it felt like EngÂlish to us. More tricks of whatÂevÂer magÂic had brought us here. He had no idea what kind of spells had transÂformed us, or where our items could have come from. It felt like a risk to trust him with all that, but we didnât reÂalÂly know how the inÂforÂmaÂtion could be used against us, and we needÂed the help.
And he was a good friend and host, acÂcliÂmaÂtisÂing us to VanÂthis. He showed us how the bee-singers guidÂed and calmed the bees, usÂing abilÂiÂties simÂiÂlar to HanÂnaâs to muÂsiÂcalÂly maÂnipÂuÂlate them. The soothÂing sound of the lute strings mixed with the humÂming of the bees would stay with me a long time.
Riya and I were inÂvitÂed to meet one of the giÂant ones. It was called a viryÂont, a creaÂture that was as fluffy as a pomeranÂian but three times as big and with huge, mulÂti-faceted eyes. I was afraid of it, but seeÂing how paÂtientÂly it reÂspondÂed to Riyaâs exÂcitÂed pats, I plucked up the courage to touch it. Its hair felt like stiff cotÂton, and my hand came away coatÂed with pollen, makÂing me sneeze.
HanÂna played a small but wild perÂforÂmance at The HonÂeyÂhart. Rex creÂatÂed coloured lights to spin around her for added flair, but the small crowd that had gathÂered in the inn for the evening seemed takÂen enough by the song. At one point, someÂone held up a fidÂdle and HanÂna called them over to join her. By the end, they had acÂcuÂmuÂlatÂed a drumÂmer, too, and though HanÂna didnât know their songs and they didnât know hers, they manÂaged to folÂlow each othÂerâs muÂsic and everyÂone had a blast. It was more joyÂful than techÂniÂcalÂly proÂfiÂcient, but someÂhow more beauÂtiÂful for it. A couÂple peoÂple lined up at the end to thank HanÂna and tip her or buy her a drink for her time. She shone with pleaÂsure the enÂtire night.
ArÂries made fast friends with sevÂerÂal of the vilÂlagers and was ofÂten away from the inn. PeoÂple came callÂing for him, or to deÂlivÂer food in thanks for all sorts of small chores heâd helped with. Taltro, a young man with bat wings sproutÂing from his arms and a shy smile, came callÂing with flowÂers while ArÂries was out, and KenÂta took him aside to let him down genÂtly.
