CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Mac paused outside the apartment and breathed deeply. Part of her wanted to throw open the door and go inside. No, what she really wanted was to tear it from its hinges and to hell with any pretense of subtly. She wanted to show those on the other side of the door that she was in no mood for games. But another part, the cop part, knew better. She needed Mateo’s people to trust her enough to be honest with her. Otherwise, she might never learn what she needed to in order to help her sister.

Her fingers closed around the doorknob and she slowly turned it. Relief filled her when the door opened. She had worried it might be locked. Of course, it would have been had she been the one doing the debriefing. After such a screw up, the last thing she would have wanted was someone interrupting her as she not only found out what happened and why but made sure her people never made such a mistake again.

Mac stepped inside and closed the door behind her. As she did, she quickly took in the scene. Mateo stood before the Marines, the three Mac assumed had been sent into town and who had let her sister go with them. They were braced to attention, their eyes focused on some point on the far wall behind Mateo. Their expressions spoke volumes, betraying not only guilt but embarrassment.

“I have this under control, Captain,” Mateo said without turning to look at her.

The tone of his voice told Mac he was in full Marine mode and would brook no argument. Well, too bad. She had questions she needed answered.

For a moment, she said nothing. Instead, she considered the best way to proceed. Then she took her cue from her cousin. He had addressed her as her commanding officer. She would respond in kind, for the moment. “Sir, there are a few questions I need them to answer.”

“As do I.”

Now he turned to her. With a jerk of his head, he motioned her into the hall. Much as she wanted to argue, she did not. As a cop and as a Marine, she knew the importance of maintaining the chain of command. For that reason alone, she would not do anything to undermine him in front of his people.

At least not yet.

“Mac, I know why you want to be in there for the debriefing,” he said as soon as the door closed behind them. “Hell, I’d want to be there if our roles were reversed. But I can’t let you, not right now. You’re too close to this and to Abby. My people feel bad enough already about what happened.” He ran a hand through his hair, a sure sign of his own frustration and anger.

“Cuz, they know they royally fucked up and right now they are waiting to find out just how big the boot is going to be that I use to kick their asses for it. I can use that, but not if you are in there with me.
