âOh, yeah,â Hannah said. âOnce upon a time, it was my big thing.â Noah tried to picture the grown-up Hannah, with her messy clothes and paint-stained hands, as a ballet dancer. It wasnât easy.
Hannah saw the look of doubt on his face. She laughed. âBelieve it or not, Mr. Spencer,â she said, pretending to be angry. âI was actually pretty good. I got all kinds of main parts.â
Hannah picked up the caterpillars, and they headed out the door. Noah teased, âIf you were so good, why arenât you still dancing?â
Hannah didnât answer right away. She looked thoughtful. They reached the gym.
âI found out I didnât love dancing,â she said finally. âI had talent, but I didnât love it. I just loved the applause.â
Addy frowned. âHow could you tell the difference?â
Hannah started untangling the mobiles. She hung them on rolling coat racks.
âWell, I started moving into better programs. There was more competition. I got fewer main parts. Less praise,â she said. âIt didnât make me want to work harder. It made me lose interest.â
She arranged the caterpillars on a table. âMeanwhile, I had spent all my extra time painting without anyone looking at me. Thatâs how I knew that art was my real love. Itâs what I would do even if no one cared.â
Zoe nodded. âThatâs how I feel about basketball. I want to win, but thatâs not why I play. I love to spend every minute I can on the court.â
âThen thatâs your true calling, Zoe,â Hannah said. She brushed her hands together. âWeâre almost done. Iâm sure youâre all starving. Noah, can you put up those watercolors? Weâll go across the street and bring back some takeout. I think the rain has let up.â
