Chapter Nine

What do I think? Is this your idea of a sick joke, or is it a test to see if I knew you were the one following me? And why in God’s name would you follow me in the first place? So many questions, so little time. I have to get out of here!

“It’s very — oh, excuse me. I have to take this.” I dug into my jacket pocket and pulled out my phone. “What’s that, Janine? Paul fell down a well? — I mean off a ladder? I’ll be right there!”

I started backing away from the two Davis men, who by this time were looking at me as if I’d suffered a stroke. “I’m so sorry. I have to go. My brother…” I turned and walked briskly back to the car with Luca following close behind.

“Brandy.”

“Can’t talk now, Luca. Paul needs me. I’ll call you.” I jumped in my car and didn’t look back until I hit I-95.

“I should tell Bobby,” I thought when rational thinking returned, which was followed by an immediate reversal. “No. I have to stop involving him.” But he already knew about my stalker, he even called it in and had cops on the lookout for him. Now what?

Should I tip off the police? Confront him myself? Have my boyfriend beat him up? None of these solutions seemed like great ideas. Assuming Luca had no clue that his dad had been following me around, it could severely damage their relationship. How could I risk that when I don’t know the circumstances behind it?

I needed to step back for a minute and regroup. There was a Dunkin’ Donuts at the next exit. Ten minutes later I was back in the car with a dozen assorted doughnuts and a couple in a bag in case I got guilted into sharing.

As I drove up to the apartment building, Nick pulled in behind me. His mouth was set in a bemused grin. Guess he wasn’t all that surprised to see me out and about. That’s one of the things I love most about Nick. He lets me be me.

“Hey,” I said and handed him the box. “I had a craving for some powdered jelly doughnuts, but there’s plenty to go around…just not the chocolate frosted ones, they’re my second favorite…or the coconut. I really love the coconut.”

Nick peeked inside the box. “So, that leaves one pink frosted sprinkle.”

“Yeah,” I said. “It looks really festive, don’t you think?” Also, I wasn’t a fan, so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat it after the others were gone.

It was so cold we could see our breath as we headed into the building. Nick’s hair was soaking wet from his workout and clung to his scalp in loose waves. Honestly, he looked a whole lot more edible than the doughnuts.

I waited until we got inside before regaling him with tales of my afternoon. I told him about the fistfight that almost broke out at Forest View Rehab Center, and then I eased into my discovery at Mr.
