I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it. No matter how many times I wake up next to her, I always think it’s a dream.

We have rain today, and I hope this is a sign the water will wash away all the ugly of the last few days. Alexandra is still asleep. I wish we could have one more day to regroup. I reach over and gently weave my fingers into the strands of her hair. She looks like the angel she is.

We stayed up late, just talking. We wanted to organize our thoughts and have answers for the questions that would inevitably come with our announcement today. The world would know. Even though Quinn had signed her mouth closed effectively, would she keep it that way? Silence has never been her strong suit.

I will have to answer friends, our set family, and the press about my father. They will see my hands and deduce rather quickly what happened. I don’t want this for my mother.

My mother. I can’t get her off my mind, in my waking hours or sleep.

Then we have Jordan. He is a problem on multiple fronts. His drunken fit last night could set the tone for everyone. Alexandra and I agreed there was really no way to predict what he would say or do. We have to be prepared for every angle and his influence on the set may not be the happiness we hope our set-side family would have for us and all the changes that are coming.

My head already hurts and I’ve only been awake for thirty seconds.

Lex begins to stir slowly. That and her soft words shake me from my early morning inner dialogue. “You’re not thinking of backing out, are you?”

“What?” I ask, confused.

“Today. Telling everyone. If you think it’s too much with the shake-up, we can wait.”

I slide my fingers through her chestnut locks again. “We don’t need to hide. I think we should still put everything out in the open. This isn’t the first hard thing we’ve done together, and it won’t be the last, even though I wish it would be.”

“You’ve had so much in two days.”

“We both have.”

Alexandra rolls over and lays her head on my chest. “We should check on your mother before we report in to the unknown. Do you want to see her in person? Call?”

“I need to see her. I want to check on her physically, so she can’t wash over her pain.”

“She’s going to be in pain anyway, Julian.”

“I know. I hate it. I’ve always hated it. Hearing her cry guts me nearly beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.”

“I’m sure she feels the same about you. You’d rather take her pain and she’d rather take yours.”

I close my eyes and can feel her pain from here. She’s now in a place that’s unfamiliar, both in body and spirit. She’s finally resigning herself to the fact she’s lost the love of her life. Even though the man she loved has been gone a long time, it’s now real.
