CHAPTER 16

Teruo

Teruo drew in a breath. The air was oddly freezing. Had the ghosts left the barrier Shinji set in the back yard and entered the house? Or perhaps Keiko had returned from spying on Ueda and set camp in their bedroom.

No… she wouldn’t intrude on them like this.

Maybe the central heating stopped working. Yeah, that must be it. He needed to get up and check it or grab more blankets.

Teruo grunted, struggling to move his body, but he was stuck in place. His arms and legs were paralyzed. Shit… he couldn’t even feel them. He couldn’t feel anything other than the intense cold and a familiar sense of nausea.

Teruo cracked his eyes open, unable to make anything out until the fogginess of his sleep disappeared. Tears gathered in the corners as the air hit him.

The fuck is going on?

When his eyes were finally wide open, a gasp came up his throat, but it was constricted and sounded like a strangled wheeze. The entire bedroom was filled with white spiritual energy.

Shinji’s energy.

It circled the bed, undulating and twisting, like eels in a river. Teruo’s jaw was tight and pain spread through his face. The reiryoku instantly reacted to his state of awareness, and long tendrils, glowing in the darkness of the room, descended down upon him, swirling around his body.

From the corner of his eye, Teruo saw Shinji sleeping too far for Teruo to reach. Not that he could without any feeling in his body. How the hell was the reiryoku floating in the air like this without Shinji controlling it? It had happened at Shinji’s apartment too and even Shinji himself seemed alarmed about it. Was the energy supposed to be out like this? Was there something wrong?

The reiryoku looked as though it had a mind of its own and desired Teruo’s vitality. His body was weakening. His gut clenched and bile came up his throat, getting stuck there, acrid and disgusting. His head pounded, his vision doubling and his ears ringing. A weird feeling of floating washed over him and suddenly he wasn’t sure whether he was at home anymore or how much time passed or whether he was even alive.

But one, single thought remained clear in his mind. This was a Shinigami’s power. Shinji had warned him that Shinigami’s reiryoku sometimes warped the sense of time and could be lethal to those around them. That was why the gates had wards around them and why other supernaturals were wary of Shinigami.

Shit…!

Was Shinji’s reiryoku killing him?

Teruo couldn’t utter a single word to wake him up and tell him to pull back the energy.

Shinji…

The reiryoku whirled above him, cold, menacing, consuming his vitality. Maybe he’d been wrong not to fear the energy, not to fear Shinji. After all, he was an entity that controlled the dead. And he’d warned Teruo. He’d told him it was better not to know, it was better to stay away.

Teruo’s eyelids hung heavy and he closed his eyes, letting the reiryoku consume him. There was nothing he could do.
