As a grandparent now, I would like our grandkids and, someday, their kids and even their grandkids to know about Sara and me. Not every detail of our lives, certainly, but the kind of people we are, the values we hold, and the efforts we made for them before they were even born. I would like them to know how much we loved them, how invested we were in their futures and in their happiness. How worried we were for the world into which they were born and how hopeful we were that they would somehow contribute to healing that world. As a start, I hope our kids give their kids this little book you’re reading. And maybe this book will encourage you to record your own family legacy for the generations that follow, or perhaps to search online and connect with your more distant family. So you won’t regret not knowing your story and telling your story, and your descendants won’t regret not hearing it.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the lives of untold numbers of grandparents. In some cases, as with us, grandparents and grandchildren were relegated to virtual hugs over FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom. Those were the lucky grandparents who had the wherewithal and the technology to stay in touch with their grandkids and the health to hear and see their family. Other grandparents, who lived close enough to their grandchildren, saw them through the windows of their home or assisted living facility. The sadness we saw, in-person or during news coverage, on the faces of grandparents in hospitals, nursing homes, veterans’ homes, or hospice, separated from their grandchildren and surrounded by strangers in masks and gowns, are tragic images I’ll never forget.

At the other end of the spectrum, in many cases grandparents who were able put themselves at risk to provide day care for grandchildren whose preschools or schools had closed and whose parents had no choice but to go to work outside the home. In many ways, those families’ adaptations brought them closer to the “old country” model where several generations of family lived together and looked after one another.
