Chapter Twenty-Two

The warm welcome didn’t help. By the time the authorities captured the crocodile, released us from the tight quarters of the concession stand where I was way too close for way too long to the proctologists, and I finally arrived at the hotel, dragging my suitcase behind me, I was completely wiped out. Thankfully, my hotel was not the same place the doctors were holding their world conference to discuss whatever it was proctologists talked about.

Thankfully, this hotel was more like an über-exclusive resort and spa. At this point, I didn’t care where I stayed. As long as it had a bed, a shower and no crocodiles, I didn’t care.

I checked in and saw I’d been assigned to the thirteenth floor. I hoped that didn’t signal bad luck. Holding my key card in front of me, I dragged my suitcase to the elevator. A few seconds later, one of the elevators arrived. Reggae music was playing. I winced, now forever ruined for reggae by a bunch of hammered proctologists.

I was pleasantly surprised by my room. It was nice and airy with a big bed and a shaded balcony overlooking the beach and ocean. The view of the water was pretty, especially if I didn’t have to swim or sail in it. The decor was beachy—blues, yellows and brown. It was cheerful, simple and clean. The bathroom had exposed stone and a fancy coffeemaker. I could definitely live here for a couple of days.

I examined the welcome basket of fruit on the desk and took out an apple. After washing it in the bathroom sink, I took a bite and started to get my computer equipment set up. As soon as I could, I checked out the Wi-Fi speed. For a remote island, the speed was decent. I’d brought a Wi-Fi enhancer, and while the speed wouldn’t be what I was used to, it would do.

I took my phone and a bottle of water and sat out on the balcony. I called Finn first to let him know I’d arrived.

“So, was the trip uneventful?” Finn asked.

“Ah... I wouldn’t say uneventful, but I made it here alive, so that counts for something.”

“Knowing you, it certainly does. How’s the hotel?”

“It’s prime. Andy booked me at some exclusive resort with a private beach, villas, a couple of infinity pools, a spa and the works. It’s pretty sweet, even for someone like me who isn’t a big fan of sand and sun.”

“He said it was the last hotel room he could find available. Guess there is some kind of huge conference going on this week.”

“Proctologists.”

“Excuse me?”

“The proctologists of the world are having their big meeting here.”

“Damn. Guess it has to happen somewhere.”

“Right? But what are the odds it happens when I’m on the island?” I sighed. “Oh, well. At least they’re not meeting at my hotel. I’m thankful for that. In fact, I’m considering an alternate route back to the US Virgin Islands. I’m not doing that ferry ride again.”

“I’ll have Glinda look into it.
