ROMEO

I sit on the windowsill as she sleeps. Penelope is beautiful in the dappled moonlight streaming in. We extinguished the bedside lamp almost immediately after having sex, taking the rest of our pleasures in darkness.

But now, I want a cigarette. That’s how sex between us always was. When it ended, I sat up in bed, desperate to enjoy the only thing that could take me higher than fucking my wife.

The ache for a cigarette drives me from the room. I quietly pull on my clothes, eyes never leaving Penelope. It’s the first time I’ve known where she was in years. My only hope is that she’s still here when I return.

I climb in my truck, cooled by the sun dipping beyond the horizon, and turn on the heater. My hands and feet take me to Rusty’s, to where Bash and Jagger must be. I need to talk to someone who understands. I need perspective from people who get it.

In the years that followed Penelope’s absence, they were the only ones who stood by me. Sure, the other men of Devil’s Dawn felt bad for what had happened, but they didn’t know what to say. They patted me on the back and kept on going. It was hard for them to see a brother fall apart, but what could they do?

“Woof,” Jagger shakes his head when he sees me, “you look rough.”

I feel rough. I am renewed by my wife’s return, but I’m also emotionally drained. “Berlin is back.” Well, I guess it’s Penelope now. I’ve called her Berlin for so long that it feels like her name. Even when we got married and she became Penelope Carter, she was always Berlin.

Jagger’s face drains of blood. He never met my wife, but he’s heard about her nonstop. “Berlin?” He asks hesitantly. “Why?”

That’s the question of the hour. I know he doesn’t mean it as harshly as it sounds, but I wish I had the answer regardless.

I’m thankful when Jagger pours me a beer and puts it in front of me. I shouldn’t drink, drinking has always led me down a dangerous path at Rusty’s, but I grab the pint and chug half of it anyway. It tastes horrible after having Penelope on my tongue, but it quenches my thirst.

“I don’t know. Probably to help her mother since that’s where she’s staying.” The Penelopes hate one another though. It was common knowledge growing up that the Berlin family was broken. Her father never married her mother and he didn’t bother to give two shits about his child either. Some days he came home, but more often than not he spent the night at another girlfriend’s house. The fights between him and older Penelope had brought the cops to their house on more than one occasion. I don’t know where he’s at now; I never see him around town anymore.

Jagger surreptitiously grabs a drink for someone else, keeping his pitied gaze on me. “When did she get back?”

He’s asking all the questions I wanted to ask.
