The doorbell persisted, waking Penny from a dead sleep. She groaned, punched her pillow, and put on her robe. Nearly two hours sleep just wasnât enough, and whoever was now banging on her door, threatening to take it off its hinges, better have a good reason.
She peered through the peep hole. Nick. A worried Nick, gauging by his expression. She disarmed the security system and then opened the door. âWhatâs wrong?â
âSorry to wake you, Mrs. Crown. You need to get dressed. The hospital called about John William.â
Lucas stood behind Penny. âIs heâ¦?â
âHeâs awake and asking for Mrs. Crown,â Nick stepped inside then closed the door.
Penny frowned. âWhy didnât they call me?â
âI donât know.â Nick shrugged. âI do know they called me. Letâs go.â
Penny and Lucas rushed to dress and met Nick back in the kitchen. He was downing a large glass of water. âHope itâs okay that I helped myself.â He lifted the glass. âI tend to dehydrate on long plane rides.â
âOf course.â Penny grabbed her phone from its charger and her purse. How long a flight had he been on to get here? Where had he been?
âReady?â
âYes.â Penny grabbed her handbag and stuffed her phone in it.
On the counter beside the sink, Nick set down the glass. âLucas, you drive Mrs. Crownâs car.â He spared her a glance. âRide with me.â
âIâll need to check the car before Lucas gets near it,â she said.
âI already have and will check it again as soon as youâre ready. Meet me out there.â
âIâll check it,â she insisted. No way would she abdicate Lucasâs safety. That wasnât happening.
Nick must have realized it. âFine,â he said. âLetâs go.â
He didnât argue. He had realized and understood, knew she needed to check firsthand to know Lucas was safe.
Penny went over the car and Lucas watched, observing her methods. Nick coached him on what she was doing and why. That pleased Penny. He was teaching Lucas how to protect himself.
Minutes later, they were in their respective cars and on the way to the hospital.
Penny adjusted her seatbelt. âThank you for not fighting me on checking the car. I needed to do it.â
âI know.â Nick turned on his signal to turn left. âAre you okay today?â
She looked over at him, said nothing.
âLook, I know itâs the anniversary of your husbandâs death, and thatâs got to be hard. I am a little surprised Alanaâs funeral is scheduled for today.â
âLucas took comfort in releasing her to Mark.â
âThat was a loving gesture. Iâm sure it meant a lot to Lucas that you would agree to it.â
âI canât refuse him anything that helps him get through this.â She shrugged. âIt hurts too much.â
âYou loved Mark.â
Surprised, she sent him a hard look. âHe was my husband. Of course, I loved him.â
âSorry. No offense intended.â Nick looked away. âYou know very little about me, but I know a great deal about you and your husband, about his murder, and your frustration with his case pushing you to investigate and solve the murder yourself.
