June 10 @ 0500

The doorbell persisted, waking Penny from a dead sleep. She groaned, punched her pillow, and put on her robe. Nearly two hours sleep just wasn’t enough, and whoever was now banging on her door, threatening to take it off its hinges, better have a good reason.

She peered through the peep hole. Nick. A worried Nick, gauging by his expression. She disarmed the security system and then opened the door. “What’s wrong?”

“Sorry to wake you, Mrs. Crown. You need to get dressed. The hospital called about John William.”

Lucas stood behind Penny. “Is he…?”

“He’s awake and asking for Mrs. Crown,” Nick stepped inside then closed the door.

Penny frowned. “Why didn’t they call me?”

“I don’t know.” Nick shrugged. “I do know they called me. Let’s go.”

Penny and Lucas rushed to dress and met Nick back in the kitchen. He was downing a large glass of water. “Hope it’s okay that I helped myself.” He lifted the glass. “I tend to dehydrate on long plane rides.”

“Of course.” Penny grabbed her phone from its charger and her purse. How long a flight had he been on to get here? Where had he been?

“Ready?”

“Yes.” Penny grabbed her handbag and stuffed her phone in it.

On the counter beside the sink, Nick set down the glass. “Lucas, you drive Mrs. Crown’s car.” He spared her a glance. “Ride with me.”

“I’ll need to check the car before Lucas gets near it,” she said.

“I already have and will check it again as soon as you’re ready. Meet me out there.”

“I’ll check it,” she insisted. No way would she abdicate Lucas’s safety. That wasn’t happening.

Nick must have realized it. “Fine,” he said. “Let’s go.”

He didn’t argue. He had realized and understood, knew she needed to check firsthand to know Lucas was safe.

Penny went over the car and Lucas watched, observing her methods. Nick coached him on what she was doing and why. That pleased Penny. He was teaching Lucas how to protect himself.

Minutes later, they were in their respective cars and on the way to the hospital.

Penny adjusted her seatbelt. “Thank you for not fighting me on checking the car. I needed to do it.”

“I know.” Nick turned on his signal to turn left. “Are you okay today?”

She looked over at him, said nothing.

“Look, I know it’s the anniversary of your husband’s death, and that’s got to be hard. I am a little surprised Alana’s funeral is scheduled for today.”

“Lucas took comfort in releasing her to Mark.”

“That was a loving gesture. I’m sure it meant a lot to Lucas that you would agree to it.”

“I can’t refuse him anything that helps him get through this.” She shrugged. “It hurts too much.”

“You loved Mark.”

Surprised, she sent him a hard look. “He was my husband. Of course, I loved him.”

“Sorry. No offense intended.” Nick looked away. “You know very little about me, but I know a great deal about you and your husband, about his murder, and your frustration with his case pushing you to investigate and solve the murder yourself.
