“Well, what did she want?” Astra presses.

We’re sitting in my office eating, and I’m still trying to process the fact that Hedlund has been calling me non-stop for a few days now. I’ve been going through everything in my head, trying to figure out what it is she could possibly want. Astra’s constant nagging hasn’t helped me any, but I can’t think of a single reason why that woman would be reaching out to me.

“Well? What did she want?” Astra asks again.

“How many times are you going to ask me that?” I ask.

“As many times as it takes me to get an answer from you.”

After our conversation with Father Harding, we grabbed some lunch and came back to the office. The entire time, Astra has been pestering me about what Hedlund wanted, asking over and over like a five-year-old on a road trip who’s hopped up on sugar asking if we’re there yet. By the time we got back to the office, I wanted to strap her to a chair with duct tape and put a gag in her mouth.

I pull my phone out of my bag and set it down on the desk in front of me. I pop a chip into my mouth and chew as I call up my voicemails. After hitting play, I hit the button for the speakerphone and sit back.

“Agent Wilder, this is Senator Kathryn Hedlund. I know you must be wondering why I’m calling you out of the blue like this, given our… history. But there are matters the two of us must discuss. Please stop ducking my calls, Agent Wilder. Things are in motion that you must be made aware of. This is not a threat, but your life and that of your sister are quite literally hanging in the balance. You have my number. Please call me back as soon as you possibly can.”

The message ends and I lean forward and end the playback. Pushing the phone aside, I pick up my sandwich and take a bite. Astra is sitting in her seat, scowling at the phone. She finally looks up at me.

“You could have saved me some frustration and played that for me earlier,” she says.

“I could have. But watching you get bent out of shape is one of life’s little joys.”

“Ass.”

“Sometimes.”

“Most of the time,” she says. “What do you think Hedlund wants?”

“To kill me and Kit.”

“So, you think she’s still part of the Thirteen?”

I nod. “I’m almost positive of it.”

“Why?”

“Just… I am.”

Astra sighs and sits back in her chair. “You’re the one who taught me the importance of being emotionally divorced enough from a situation to see it clearly. To think logically and rationally,” she says. “I know you don’t like Hedlund. I know there’s some history and a lot of bad blood between you two. But what specifically makes you think she’s part of it?”

I take another bite of my sandwich then set it down and push it away, chewing on it as I consider Astra’s words.
