This is a huge jump in EV and much greater than what we’d ever expect to see with different flop sizings in single raised pots.

If I had a great but not nut-type hand, such as the A♦K♥, I’d probably only bet the pot or so. That’s because we still lose to ace-trey and the five-trey suited, and betting smaller on average saves us money when we’re behind. It’s also worth keeping in mind that even if our opponent does have the ace-trey or five-trey suited on the turn, he may not raise with them. And even if he does, we’ll just call his turn check- raise and won’t always get stacked on the river. So we probably don’t want to bet too big with just top pair as we’ll sometimes be behind on the flop and need to keep our opponent’s calling range a bit wider.

Hands I’d consider betting small: I hope to sound like a broken record at this point (as that means you get it and we’re on the same page), but since our opponent will likely have many AJ, A9, and A8 type hands, I’d bet my weaker aces small. I still don’t want to give free cards willy nilly to his flush draws, gutshots, and pairs of tens, but we shouldn’t bet a hand like the A♣7♣ too big or we’ll fold all his pairs of tens and lose additional money to better aces. I’d also consider betting small with king-ten and plan to check back on the river.

Easy mistakes to make: I think spots like this are where many players can get overly obsessed with precision and theory when it’s just not necessary or overly useful. For example, I have little idea off the top of my head what my “bluffing to value betting ratio” is on the turn if I’m betting a 1.75 PSB with a range of sets and draws. But I know I can bluff a lot here since we still have one more street left to go, our bets are huge, there’s lots of stack depth, and our bluffs have a significant amount of equity. That’s good enough for me as it’s much more important to be able to recognize a good overbet spot than worrying about getting the ratios and frequencies right.
