Chapter Sixteen
Natalie
Kade leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a suggestive murmur. âIâll show you how to make the dumpling wrappers. They take a lot of kneading, and Iâll need to demonstrate the right technique.â
I swept the chopped onions off the board. âOr you could tell me whatâs going on.â My voice came out sharp.
He blinked. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean this.â I waved my finger between our bodies. âThe endless flirting that gets me all hot and bothered, and goes nowhere.â
He leaned against the far counter, his expression turning serious. âWe already talked about that. Nothingâs going to happen between us.â
âYes, but you keep teasing me. And I think you do it to avoid any sensitive subjects, like telling me how you really feel.â
âWhat?â
âFlirting gives you power over me, and I think you like that.â Frustration made the words grind more harshly out of me than Iâd intended. âDoes it makes you feel more secure? More in control?â
His jaw hardened. He looked like he wanted to interrupt, but I was on a roll.
âYou flirt with me because itâs easy,â I accused. âAnd when Iâm flustered, I donât ask hard questions. It means you donât have to say anything real.â
âYou want to know something real?â His voice was a growl. âYou drive me crazy, Nat. Thatâs whatâs real. If you were anyone else, Iâd have you on the counter already.â
I closed my eyes, fighting a hot wave of desire at the suggestion.
âWell, you have to stop,â I stammered. âItâs too confusing. It used to be fun, but now itâs just frustrating.â
âYouâre right.â A muscle was ticking in his jaw, but he didnât sound angry. âNo more teasing. Weâre just going to cook. You can start by breaking four eggs in here.â He placed a bowl in front of me. âThen whisk them and add seasonings. After that, weâll throw in some greens, and fry it with garlic and ginger.â
I sucked in a deep breath, firming my limbs. Maybe I shouldnât have been so hard on him, but he didnât seem upset. And at least now I could try and push all the sexual longings out of my head. âOkay. Good.â
âWhile you do the eggs, Iâll get the dumpling wrappers started. Theyâre just flour and water.â He poured flour into another bowl, then added water and started kneading.
I inexpertly cracked the eggs and managed to get most of them into the bowl with only a few small puddles on the counter. Then I grabbed the whisk.
In spite of our agreement, the kitchen was still sizzling with sexual energy. The tension felt like a lit fuse, burning toward something unknown. It set me on edge.
Sticking the whisk into the egg mixture, I whipped it around too vigorously and bits of egg flew everywhere.
âHey!â Kade tried to rub a blob of egg off his face with flour-covered hands, and turned it into a sticky smear. âWhat are you doing?â
âWhoops.â I wiped my splattered cheek against my shoulder. âI guess Iâm making dumplings on your face.
