Chapter Twenty

Levi’s voice was as soft as a caress. “It hurts, I know, but you need to push past the pain. Keep fighting.”

Jordan tried to turn toward him. Her muscles screamed at her to stop moving.

“You can’t lie here forever,” Levi told her.

She closed her eyes and felt his fingertips brush against her arm. They left behind a trail of goose bumps.

“You need to get up.”

The tingling sensation sharpened, pricking at her skin like needles. “That hurts,” she moaned, turning her head from side to side. “Why are you hurting me?”

“I want you to get up, now,” Levi urged. “Open your eyes.”

The pain spread across her chest and made its way down her arms. He’s right, she realized, struggling to stretch out her legs. If I don’t get up now, I don’t think I’ll be able to get up ever again.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she tried to get her body to move. Her limbs quivered from the strain. “I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered.

“You know as well as I do that you have the strength to see this through.” She felt him brush the hair back from her face. “If I could, I would take your place, but you don’t need me. Do you?”

Yes. The word rested on the tip of her tongue. She wanted to tell him how much she missed him. How having him close enough to touch was a relief and a joy.

You need to stop, she told herself. You know you can’t have him.

Not trusting herself to respond, she gritted her teeth and pushed herself up with her hands.

“That’s my girl,” Levi murmured in her ear. She felt the lightest touch of his lips against her cheek before white light blinded her.

Jordan fell onto her side, wincing from what felt like bruised ribs. She lay there for a moment, waiting for her eyes to adjust. When they did, she struggled into a seated position. She did a quick internal check. Aside from the cramps in her legs, the rest of her body seemed to be in working order.

When she touched what was left of Agares’s power, she let out a sigh of relief. There wasn’t much left, but it was better than nothing.

The white room started to ring.

It took her a moment to realize that the sound came from her backpack. Bending and stretching in any direction was painful, which made it difficult to reach. Snagging a strap with one finger, she pulled it toward her and took out her cell. Tully’s name lit up the screen.

“Hello?” she rasped into the receiver.

“I hope it’s not too early to call?” The way Tully asked the question made it clear he didn’t think it was. “I wanted to stop by after lunch to get your list of questions.”

Jordan squinted and braced her head against her hand. “For what?” she finally asked.

“I’m headed to Rawridge today,” he said. “Two p.m. with Greg, remember?”

“Right. Of course,” she said, and glanced at her phone. It was only ten after nine.
