Thankfully the bundle on the floor of the pool house had just been the pool cover. Not her sister’s body. Jim was tired. Fucking exhausted.

He leaned back in the driver’s seat of his little Kia and closed his eyes. The hot sun reflected off the hood of his car and bathed him in warm light. He wanted a nap. A nap and a scotch. A scotch, a nap, and a steak, in that order. His phone dinged as a text came in. That could be Sandy. Ding ding ding. Definitely Sandy.

And now came the ringtone. When he picked up, Sandy started talking as though they were in the middle of the conversation. “Your texting is horrible when you’re in a hurry. I’m assuming you’re not going to let her out of your sight now.”

It wasn’t a question, but he answered anyway. “She’s right here. You got the thousand-dollar clue correct. Care to go for the daily double?”

“Mr. Relan might have something to say about that.”

Jim looked over at Zevah. She shook like a leaf, even wearing his jacket, out here in the sun. He needed to word his next statement carefully. “Not sure sending her to her dad is a good idea.”

Sandy picked up on it. “Wait. You don’t mean because she just doesn’t want to go, do you?”

“Affirmative.”

“You are not serious? You think maybe he…” She trailed off. “Was Avira there?”

“No sign,” Jim said.

“That sucks. Likely now the sister’s been snatched too.”

Jim had the phone pushed to his ear but was still worried that Zevah could hear that. Surely she had to have an idea that was the case.

Sandy continued. “Bring her to Ely’s. I’ll go get it set up while you’re dealing with the police. We can keep an eye on her, and no one will know to look there.”

“That’ll work.” It was the perfect plan. Only Detective Miller would know right off the bat, but Moon and his team, that might take a minute.

He hung up.

“You know any place your sister would go if she needed to run? A friend? Relatives? Close enough she could get there on foot?”

“Um. No.”

“Does she have a boyfriend who might have scooped her up?”

“She has a girlfriend, Megan.”

Jim started driving, “We’re going to a safe place right now. Okay?” He glanced side to side, looking around for suspicious vehicles, worried they’d get ambushed on the way out of the neighborhood.

“Is there a back way in or out of this subdivision?” he asked.

“No. One way in and out.” She looked in the side mirror. “I don’t understand all this. I mean, are these the same people? You killed those guys, right? Why is this happening?”

“I don’t know. The guys I took out were most likely grunts on the ground in Wyoming. There wasn’t enough brain matter between those three to run a popcorn machine. If this operation is organized and funded, there will be more players. Smarter people will be giving the orders. Maybe the plan was to take both of you from the start, and our shopping day ruined it.
