I don’t know what I expected, but that wasn’t what I’d planned in my head.

Then again, we’ve been avoiding each other for months. She also spends one weekend a month going back to Phoenix; I need to find out what that’s all about. She did just move here not long ago, so she could be still sorting shit out, but something’s up.

I’m being stupid, but it’s like she’s holding something back. I don’t know what and clearly my instincts when it comes to her are a little rusty, but I can’t put my finger on it.

Does she just fucking hate my guts, and that’s the end of it? If so, why did she give a shit about driving me home?

Even with no obstacles in our way, she’s got better things in her future. I get it. I wouldn’t date me either.

I’m a serial bachelor who never grew up. Being able to work out a washing machine isn’t exactly screaming boyfriend of the year material. Not that I’ve ever been that.

The thing that strikes me the most is how much she’s changed. Don’t get me wrong, she’s even more beautiful than I remember. Thirty-five suits her all the way down to the fucking ground. I could get me some of that, but as usual, it isn’t just her looks or her long legs that get me hard. It’s how she holds herself.

Long gone is the shy, unsure girl that I fell for in a heartbeat, and in her place is a smart, successful, confident woman who did what she set out to do.

I’m just dumbfounded that she’s acting this way. That she basically ran a mile the minute our paths crossed. And tonight, what was that all about? Fucked if I know.

Going down that road would be like going down a rabbit hole I’m not sure I’d come out of. One that, if we revisited, could end me for good.

I have a shitty sleep. My mind won’t let up.

When I turn the television on in the morning and start making myself some breakfast, I see the headlines and do a double take at the screen.

Well known biker outlaw Brenton “Tex” Dottard’s remains found in Arizona National Park.

I drop the carton of eggs and the packet of bacon on the counter and stare at the screen.

What the fuck?

I turn the television up as the reporter announces, “Homicide detectives swarmed the area of the National Park near Fort Ridge Canyon today when hikers found the remains of alleged drug cartel and registered sex offender Brenton Dottard, also known as ‘Tex,’ the former president of the notorious motorcycle gang, Phoenix Fury. In a statement from the Chief of Police today, they will be opening an investigation and combing the area, which has now been closed off to the general public so forensics can move in and try to piece together Mr. Dottard’s final moments.”

I run a hand through my hair.

Double fuck.

I reach for my phone, and just as I do, Rubble is calling me.

“You seen the news, bro?” he asks as I turn the TV down.
