Although Morisot was the only woman to be included in the Grafton’s exhibition, Rutter’s glowing description of the paintings on show could be justly applied to the work of Cassatt, Bracquemond and Gonzalès. All four women had possessed the courage, faith in their own talent and the dogged persistence to fight for their place in the century’s most revolutionary and important art movement, and to succeed.
