“This exit,” Matt said three hours later, watching the lead sinker that dangled from the rearview mirror. It was definitely pulling to the right.

Edmund pulled off Highway 101 onto the University Avenue exit, drove past a liquor store and some tired-looking bars and barred storefronts. The sinker pulled them farther and farther away from the highway, indicating right and left turns. They wound past nicer and more expensive-looking residences, past venerable trees, one in the middle of the road.

It was almost one in the afternoon, and there was a lot of traffic in downtown Palo Alto. People in BMWs and Mercedes took a second look at Edmund’s rusty Volvo.

The sinker finally shivered in place. Edmund pulled into the nearest parking lot. He took the sinker off the rearview mirror, and he and Matt climbed out of the car.

Susan was somewhere nearby.
