Bryan had a hard time keeping his eyes in his head

as Daroshi escorted him. Everywhere he looked

there were creatures. Some had those tentacles

things, and some did not, but every last one of them

was taller than him. Did all these creatures get that

big? Okay, he needed to stop calling them that, but

what was he supposed to call them? He guessed he

was just as much a creature to them as they were to

him.

His head hurt, and things were only starting.

“Bryan? This is my quarters. Welcome,” Daroshi

said as he coded in.

Bryan’s first thought was the place wasn’t too

inviting. There were a few low benches in the

main room that didn’t look comfortable. They

looked like slabs of concrete thrown together, and

the color was a funny off-grayish tint, covered with

leathery looking material. The floor was a deep

unrelieved black with no rugs to soften the

hardness of the color. The walls, just like in the

corridor, were eerie. Everything looked like dried

leathery skin and alien.

“Is everything okay?”

“Ah, yeah.”

Bryan glanced into another space to see a huge flat

surface he assumed was a bed. That, at least, had a

thin covering to soften the hardness of the bed. He

hoped. The whole place was spartan.

“Be seated. I’ll try to explain why you’re here.”

Bryan gingerly sat on one of the slabs of concrete.

Yup, just as hard as it looked.

“My species can take off-worlders as… mates.”

Daroshi waited to see what kind of reaction Bryan

would have. When nothing happened, he sighed. “I

was monitoring when Ziang collected Shawn, and I

saw how bravely you reacted. I—we—respect that

kind of courage.”

Still no response from Bryan. Daroshi was

worried; was the human in shock or something?

“I froze your image and researched you. When

Ziang returned, I requested the right to take you as

a mate, Bryan.”

Bryan stared at Daroshi.

“My kind mates with both males and females from

our world and off. There is none of this

homophobic reaction your species seems to have.

I’m honored to have one as brave as you for a

mate, and I will provide excellent care for you. My

species treat their mates with the upmost respect

and care.”

Still nothing from Bryan.

“I have served our world well and have

substantial financial resources. I believe I can

make you happy, and we’ll be good together. You

have a passion I find enticing.”

Not a word crossed Bryan’s lips.

“I am a Maz’Rarian warrior that has proven

himself in battle and holds a high rank—Gods,

would you say something!”

Bryan leaned closer. “Well, goodie for you. Nice

of you to trot out all your high ranking stats,

impressive ways, and bravery. Is this where I

applaud and fall to my knees, thanking you for

picking little ol’ me?”

“Excuse me?”

“There’s no doubt that your kind is much more

technically advanced than us, I can see that. Hell,

you guys are orbiting my planet, so that means

something, right? We sure can’t do that. So, is this

where I get all weepy-eyed ‘cause you picked a

puny human as your mate? Lucky me, huh?”

“Bryan—”

“I mean, how lucky can a guy get? You swoop

down, scare the shit of out me, chase me through

my house, stun me, and carry me off to the big neat

space ship in the sky.
