“Jamison!”

The night elf was watching the guards barring the gates, trying to still the increased disorientation he felt after using his powers. He looked up at the call; Nyx stood on the parapet, just inside the doorway of one of the towers.

“My lady.”

He closed his eyes, centered himself, before proceeding up the steep stairs to where she stood.

“My granddaughter has disturbed you.”

“No, my lady. I trust in you and your power to protect me.”

She regarded him closely. “I wonder, yet again, if my power is too much for you.”

“Never, my lady. But even if it turns me to ice, blasts me to frozen dust, it will all be in your honor and service.”

She smiled, black lips curving around perfect, gleaming teeth. “While that’s a delightful compliment” — the smile flew away — “you won’t be much use to me if you fall apart.”

“I won’t, my lady.”

“We’ll see.” She stepped out of the doorway, watched Mischief and Gefta soar away over the ocean. “She’s going to talk to Dreams, my daughter.”

“None of them can get into the city.”

“No, so we have little to fear from them directly. But their minions can pass through the barrier.”

“They’ll have no power here.”

“I won’t have any disturbances to the perfection of night!”

“We’ll keep a close watch.“

“Do that. Don’t fail me.” She took his chin in her pale, icy fingers. “Don’t fall apart, Jamison. Others would love to replace you.”

“I know, my lady.”

She nodded, strode off, left him leaning against the stone, the night dark cold radiating from it soothing his squirming brain.
