3. What is hope?

Dakota walks to the window. Roxanne is waiting at the bus stop, beneath the streetlight, wearing a strap-back, shiny plastic bustier. Dakota watches the muscles in her back as she lights a cigarette.

Roxanne seems a little nervous. She looks both ways down the dark street. She looks at her watch. She brings the cigarette to her mouth, then turns and looks up at Dakota in the window.

"You must like what you see, staring at me like that," she says to him. "I guess we both know what you need."

When the bus turns the corner down the block, she drops the cigarette and crushes it, grinding it beneath the toe of her high heel as the bus pulls up, her eyes on Dakota.

"Call me sometime," she says.

The bus door opens with a hiss, and she gets on.

Dakota watches the bus drive away, then sits back down at the desk.
