Lee was setting up a Zoom call with Walt.

“Walt, anything on the trucker who took Nate and the captives to the rental car?”

“Yes, we quickly spoke with the trucking company. They gave his name and even his GPS location. The Pennsylvania State Police have him in custody! I’m sending a task force officer up to interview him. We may get him as accessory to kidnapping, and he knows it,” Walt said.

“Did he mention the make and model of the rental car?”

“He didn’t have to. He dumped it in Citrus County. They have it and are working on what kind of vehicle he obtained to replace it. Nothing yet. Lee, how is Nick?”

“Kit went back to the hospital. She just called and said he’s awake and alert. Saying he made the wrong tactical decision not to cap McCormick with his carbine. Said his mistake was thinking he could buy time and plan by setting the rifle down and using his pistol at the close range. My call on it was he was probably right. The damn bullet just hit McCormick’s head at the wrong angle and did not penetrate. Had it done what he planned, McCormick would have had his central nervous system unplugged and the girls would have been fine. And Nick wouldn’t have been shot and Kit not traumatized by taking the perp’s head off.”

“I agree. Bullets do strange things when they hit something hard like a skull. Had it gone straight in, it would have been game over for McCormick. Maybe we should both talk to him and tell him to stop beating himself up.”

“We should as soon as we can. I am going to try to get up tomorrow night. He has another surgery, but I don’t know how quickly yet. I’ll let you know when I hear,” Lee said.

“Thanks, buddy. Keep safe and we’ll talk soon.”
