Chapter Thirteen: Nicholai

I got out of the shower, wrapping a warm towel around my waist before heading back out to the bedroom. I noticed that the bed was a mess, but Angelina was nowhere to be found. I didn’t think much of it, believing that she must’ve ventured off into the kitchen to get herself some water or something to eat after the fun we just had. I got dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a comfortable t-shirt quickly before heading downstairs myself, calling out for her, but I wasn’t met with a response.

“Angelina?” I called out again, wondering where she went off to, but that was when I saw the sign of a struggle near the breakfast nook. There was a cardboard box that had toppled over, a letter blowing in the wind from the open back door, and when I got it in my hands to read, I couldn’t believe what it said. I glanced down into the box to see the threat for myself, and I was overcome with fear, realizing that someone had managed to sneak in undetected and nab Angelina when I was in the shower. I couldn’t believe that someone could get to her under my watch like that, especially because I’d only been in there for a few minutes.

The only logical explanation that came to mind was that someone knew exactly what we were up to, and they were waiting for the perfect moment to strike, getting out before anyone could notice them. I gazed out of the window to see that my men were all still at their posts, and I wondered how this could’ve happened. I stormed outside, slamming the front door behind me, demanding answers to the questions I had trouble formulating myself.

“Come here! I need you to tell me which one of you abandoned your post tonight because Angelina is gone! From the looks of it, so is her father. Is this the kind of work I trained you men to do? Huh?” I asked them, my blood boiling beneath my skin, and they all looked down at their feet, unable to answer my simple question.

“Boss, that’s impossible. There’s no way anyone could’ve gotten in here. We haven’t left our positions all evening.”

“Well, you’re going to have to round up some men and get a search party together because Angelina is gone, and I need her returned safely to me. Is that clear?” I asked, watching all the men around me nod, and I could tell that they were afraid of what I might do. How could I have let this happen to you, Angelina? I promised to keep you safe, and I only turned away for a minute. Someone has taken you before I even had the chance to tell you I love you, and I promise I will bring you back home to safety. I promise I will help put an end to this terrible tragedy you’ve been living ever since you found your sister that
