NFUDU LEFT THE DOCTORâS office feeling more dejected than when she entered. She realized that she didnât have the liberty to dilly-dally between Ikechi and Javier anymore. The pregnancy had forced her to own up and reveal more than she was ready to. Unable to bear it any longer, she called Javier in Nice to tell him she was pregnant, but left out the part about Ikechi. She planned to reveal that bit over the weekend when he would be in London. Javier was elated by the news, but couldnât understand why Nfudu sounded unhappy. The wait till the weekend was unbearable for her, and for the rest of the week, she worried herself sick thinking about her predicament and how she was going to approach him with the whole truth. Her misery was palpable â she was jumpy and cried at every given opportunity. Everyone around her â friends, associates and employees, noticed her mood. This prompted her to isolate herself, which only drove her far deeper into her head. By the time Javier arrived on Saturday she broke down as she told him the whole story about her affair with Ikechi and the fact that she could not say for certain who the father of her baby was.
Javier was shaken by the revelation. He paced the room with both hands on his head. At intervals, he squeezed hard as though to prevent a massive explosion. When he got tired of pacing, he sat and rocked his chair while staring into thin air. Fifteen minutes later, he finally spoke.
âSo... what does this all mean?â he mumbled.
âI donât know.â Nfudu sighed.
âHow could you not know? You created this mess.â
She was taken aback by his tone as he had never ever spoken to her this harshly in the past. She gathered some courage and knelt before him, leaning on the chair for support. âIâm so sorry Javier,â she cried. âI didnât mean for this to happen. There was so much pressure from my father. I canât...â
âPressure from your father?â His tone became more menacing as he stood up and poured himself some brandy. âWe both knew he wouldnât approve of us before you travelled, but that wasnât going to stop us. Was it? You shouldnât blame this on him.â
âYes... it was my fault. I shouldnât have blamed Father. He didnât force Ikechi on me.â Tears were rolling down her cheeks as she got up from her kneeling position to assume a more comfortable one, sitting on the edge of the bed.
Javier stood to stare out the window with his drink, but barely took a sip out of it.
âI donât understand how you could do this,â he said, shaking his head. âI loved you... I love you with every fiber of my being. Why would you do this to us?â Suddenly, he felt a heavy pang of grief as the room seemed to swirl all around him. He put his glass down and held his chest as he slowly made his way to his chair.
