NOT WORTH THE WAIT

“Everything in Lisbon is remembered, everything is entered by hand in enormous ledgers that are preserved forever.” My heart sank: I imagined myself like some sad & aged clerk out of Dickens or Melville spending day after day scanning the pages of funereal books in order to catch a name. “These people,” & here he waved his hand in a circular motion that took in the dim waiter, the gray-suited man whose head was buried in a newspaper, the two passersby weighted down with enormous leather purses, “they remember the earthquake. Nothing is forgotten.” “Why’s that?” I said. It was simple. Nothing had happened for centuries. The navigators had all drowned. The whole country had drifted farther & farther out to sea to find its true weather, the perfect miasma in which we now sat. “Once upon a time we were Europeans,” he said. His cell phone rang & rang. “You’re not going to answer?” I said. No, he knew it was the colonel’s wife wanting to be driven to the prison to visit her husband, who was perfectly happy working out chess problems & writing his memoirs. “If he lives long enough there will be a pardon, & the poor man will have to go free.”
