Castle Garden in 1850.

Jenny Lind.

Tickets for the first performance were auctioned and a fee was charged to all who attended the sale, yet 3,000 people were curious enough to pay for the privilege, even though many could not actually afford to buy tickets. Though Lind’s engagement was to last for many weeks, 4,500 tickets were sold just for the first performance. Five hundred people crowded the Hudson River in boats, aiming to somehow get into Castle Garden from the rear. Lind asked that her proceeds from the first two performances—about $10,000—be donated to local charities. Barnum guaranteed her at least $1,000 per show. After her 150 performances at Castle Garden, she was more famous than ever.

In 1855, Castle Garden was taken over by the city and became the Castle Garden emigrant landing depot, the precursor to Ellis Island, until 1890. From 1896 to 1941, it housed the New York Aquarium. It is now known as the Castle Clinton National Monument. A new aquarium opened in Coney Island, Brooklyn, in 1957.
