Chapter Sixteen

The next morning I woke up next to Adam, my legs tangled up with his. The second I realised where I was, my eyes shot open. Oops. I hadn’t meant to cuddle up to him like this. His face was inches from mine, eyelids still closed.

“Adam?” I whispered. “Are you awake?”

“No,” he replied, pulling the sheet up further and snuggling into the pillow. “And I won’t be for at least another eight hours.”

“Adam.”

“Shh.”

I poked him in the arm. “I need to get to my New Year, New You class.”

“Get Eli to drive you,” he mumbled.

I frowned. “Does he have a licence?”

“No,” he said. “But he can just use mine. No one will know.”

I placed my hand on his shoulder. (In a friendly way, not in a friendly way.) “Adam, please.”

He sighed, eyes still shut. “Charmander, I haven’t slept this well in months. Literally. Months.”

“Was it my unshaven leg hairs stabbing into your skin that did it?”

“Definitely,” he said. “And also your silence. So if you wouldn’t mind…”

I studied him for a moment, with his dark, curly hair all mussed and a dusting of stubble growing on his cheeks. (Kind of similar to my legs, actually.) Under different circumstances, I might have enjoyed staring at his face for a while. Today I didn’t have time.

“Adam.”

“No.”

“Adam.”

“Stop.”

“Adam.”

“Please.”

“Adam.”

He groaned. “If our situations were reversed, you would already have stabbed me to death.”

“You have to get up and work on the case anyway,” I said. “It’s not like I’m waking you up purely so you can be my chauffeur.”

“Yes, you are.” He sighed and finally opened his eyes. “I can’t wait until this is all over.”

I frowned. “This case, you mean? With Murphy?”

He shook his head. “No. The case in Sydney.”

There were tension lines around his eyes and his jaw was tense. I chose to believe that was because of the case stressing him out and not because he was just supremely annoyed with me for waking him. I wondered why this case was taking such a toll on him. I’d asked him what it was about, but he hadn’t answered. Maybe I’d have better luck getting a response from him in his current half-asleep state.

“Does the case in Sydney have something to do with what happened to Tim?”

Adam cracked a small smile. “I’m not so tired that you’ll be able to trick me into telling you about it.”

“Hmph. Fine.” I paused. “So it’s not about Tim.”

He sighed. “OK, OK.” He disentangled his legs from mine and sat up. “I’ll drive you home. But I’m not packing up any leftovers for you to take with you.”

My jaw dropped as I sat up too. “What?”

“You forfeited that right by being so annoying.”

I frowned at him. “Do I at least get breakfast?”

“Not a chance,” he said.

I stuck my bottom lip out. “Nothing? You’re going to send me on my way without so much as a piece of toast?”

“Yes, I am.” I pouted harder and either he felt sorry for me or he was too tired to deal with an argument because he added, “But maybe I’ll make you something later.
