WHEN I TOLD SCOOBIE what I would be doing in the afternoon and asked him to be sure to pick up the kids, I didn't go into a lot of detail. I rarely call him at work, so if he was angry, I would simply say I didn't want to take a lot of his time away from patients.

If Aunt Madge and Harry had not been in on the plan, he might have blown a gasket that evening. Something he rarely does.

“Jolie, what would you think if I made arrangements for someone in our family and then some outsiders stepped in to change things? Kevin was her husband.”

“And Helen was her mother, and no one's wondering if she had a role in giving Eleanor mercury. The fact that he excluded her from all planning says a lot.” Seeing Scobie’s frown, I added, “This was actually Harry's idea.”

“Harry? He doesn't even know them.”

“I was in the office when she called and he knew what she asked. He's buried a wife and Aunt Madge has buried a husband. He probably remembers what an awful time that was, and that he had a lot of support from family and friends.”

For the first time ever, we didn’t kiss each other goodnight.
