BUSINESS WASN’T going like gangbusters, but it was steady. A lot of people wanted to talk about his mother, and Dex couldn’t help wondering which, if any of them, had been aware of her little side business. He found himself looking differently at everyone, especially the young, hip couple who came in and went right for the more erotic books on the shelf near the counter. He even looked at the old men, wondering if they were coming in because his mother had been the one bringing a little extra joy to their lives. He tried to imagine his mother explaining to a customer that she had “some really good shit” this week.

Dex shook his head. He needed to keep his mind on his task rather than wondering about each person who came through the door. But he kept going back to that box under the shelves in the back room. What the hell was he going to do with it? There had to be enough product in those books to send him to jail for quite some time, and now his fingerprints were all over it. The thing was, he didn’t know what to do about it or who to ask. Les was out of the question—he was a cop. And Dex didn’t know that many people in town. The ones he trusted enough to ask were out of state. But hell, he didn’t want to talk about this shit over the phone.

Jane might know something about it, though he was afraid to ask. If she did, he’d have thought she’d have mentioned something earlier. Either that, or she’d have gotten the goods out of the store. “Damn it, Mom,” he muttered.

“What, young man?” an elderly customer asked as she approached the counter. She was using a cane and walked hunched forward.

“Sorry, I was just thinking out loud. How can I help you?” He smiled.

The lady leaned a little closer to the counter. “Those cards are so beautiful. My sister reads Tarot, and I bet she’d love those.” The smile on her lips remained for a few seconds, and then her face tightened for a few seconds, as if she was in pain, before relaxing again.

“Are you okay?” Dex asked.

She nodded slowly. “I’m looking for some books on homeopathic medicine,” she explained. “Your mother used to have quite a collection, and I’m trying to find some natural pain relief.” She smiled. “You look a lot like her. Sarah was a dear heart, and there are so many of us in town who are going to miss her.”

He swallowed. It warmed his heart that his mother was so loved. “I’m not sure I have anything.” Dex stepped out from behind the counter. “There’s just a small section of self-help and medical guides.” He went over and looked at the shelves. “I’m sorry. I don’t think there is anything like that here at the moment. I can look in the catalog and see about ordering a book for you. If you’d like to sit down, I can check what’s available.
