Chapter 9
Sumi joined us in her full form as my little army disappeared back into the ground, smoothing over the damage they did as they came out. My nerve endings feel far better, which I guess makes sense since it’s four hours later.
The men that had been around us are gone. The first two apologized for their reaction and for setting everything in motion. As I apologized to everyone for terrifying them.
Literally none of them were injured by me. One did catch a bit of a ricochet when someone else shot the road, but I healed it in a wash of power that made everyone gasp.
Then they left.
Well, most of them. We gained six different scientists that wanted to study my friends more. Mom and I debated what to do, but in the end I had all but one of each type of animal, plus a Cro-Magnon, head back to their resting point. I did tell them that there’s a treasure trove of bodies buried far below, with dinosaurs farther down, so they’re pretty excited about the possibilities there.
It took most of the four hours for trucks to arrive to haul away the docile zombies that I set to answer to the scientists. I figured it can’t hurt. There aren’t any souls in them, so they’re just mobile meat shells.
Unlike Sumi, who’s a person in her own right in my book.
Five new mages followed us through the shattered gates. They let me see the footage of what took place when I went down. When my punch hit the gate, hell on Earth was unleashed. The spells kicked in as my magic attempted to drive through the wall of oncoming malice, and they met in an explosion that partially melted the blacktop as the gate turned into puddles of molten metal.
When everything exploded, my body was flayed, skin and muscles torn to shreds, but the magical flames started immediately as my mammoth protector waded in, lifting my body high onto its back as it stood guard in the wall of flames. Every attempt to get to me was met with an angry mammoth. That’s where the other guys came from. With the release of the magic on the gate and the angry magic-coated mammoth holding a dead girl, they needed to gain control of the situation. It took most of 45 minutes to get everyone on the scene, which is just about when I woke up.
Mom arrived not even 45 seconds before I got up. She didn’t know that I was there. She got a call from the school that I disappeared and was just about to go there to hunt for me when she got word that things were going down the drain at my parents’ house and there was an undead mammoth guarding a dead girl that claimed to live there.
Needless to say, she came as soon as she could.
Two of the powerful mages stopped near the missing gate, feeling the remaining magic on the walls. “The spells are unraveling!”
“They were anchored together.
