Chapter Seven
In his bedroom early that evening, Hamish tried on and discarded his fourth shirt, while wondering what on earth was wrong with him. He’d given more thought to his wardrobe in the last half hour, than in the last ten years combined. And, for the first time ever, had wished it contained more than seven pairs of camel cords and half a dozen variations on the checked shirt theme. All of which suddenly seemed incredibly uninspiring.
Not that it mattered what he wore, he assured himself. He was only going for a mooch around a graveyard. And even if the invitation had been proffered by an attractive woman, it wasn’t as if it was a date or anything. Thank heavens. Because, having zero experience of dates, he couldn’t begin to imagine what state one of those would have whipped him into. Heaving his attention back to sartorial matters, he was deliberating whether the blue shirt might be better than the green, when the telephone rang.
‘Greetings from Brisbane, Dad,’ sang Elaine. ‘I just wanted to let you know that we’ve landed and are on our way to the hotel.’
‘Fantastic, love,’ said Hamish, relief whooshing through him. ‘I’ve been thinking about you all day. How was the flight?’
‘Hideous. For the first time ever, I was airsick. But I’m sure it’ll be worth it. I can hardly keep my eyes open, so we’re going to try and grab some sleep now, but I’ll call again tomorrow. Hopefully with an update on the house we all like. The one with the annexe and interconnecting door.’
‘Great. Look forward to hearing all about it,’ he replied, crossing his fingers. He hated lying, but there was no way he could pour cold water on her trip by fessing up to his I’m-not-moving-over-there intention. It would have to simmer on the backburner, pending her return. At which point, she’d hopefully be bubbling over with so much enthusiasm for her and Gavin’s new life Down Under, that his decision not to join them, wouldn’t make much difference.
‘Love you, Dad,’ she added softly.
‘And I love you,’ replied Hamish. With so much meaning, his heart squeezed.
