Chapter Twelve

Kyle

Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck!

I was actually going to do this. We were actually going to do this. It didn’t matter how many times I paced around the living room or checked the diaper bag or headed back into the kitchen to wipe the counters down or pack another few snacks, we were actually going to go to the courthouse and get married.

“Papa, why are you walking?” Andy asked as I crossed in front of him and Maddie as they sat on the carpet—which we’d managed to keep clean for the last twenty-four hours, since Justin had left—watching cartoons. I never let them watch cartoons this much, so they were doing a good job of paying attention to me. Even they knew something was off.

I adjusted Everett to my other hip, brushing away a glob of spit at the corner of his mouth from where he was chewing on his fingers, and sent Andy an apologetic look.

“Sorry, baby,” I said, crossing in front of him and Maddie again—and getting an irritated grunt from Maddie as I did—to fetch a cloth diaper from the back of the sofa. “Papa’s just feeling a little restless.”

“Why?” Andy asked.

“Because he’s about to do something really big,” I answered, grabbing the diaper so I could do a better job of wiping Everett’s face.

Everett twisted and wriggled and turned his head away from my hand…which was pretty much how I felt on the inside.

“Big like a mountain?” Andy asked, shuffling around to climb up and kneel on the sofa with his elbows on the back.

“Yeah, something like that,” I said, glancing distractedly to the hallway and the front door. Justin texted that he was on his way, but that was half an hour ago.

“Why?” Andy asked, bouncing a little against the back of the sofa.

“Because drastic times call for drastic measures, baby,” I said, putting the diaper down, then walking over to the side table, where I had a bottle of juice waiting for Everett.

“What’s drast-stick?” Andy asked, sliding off the sofa—and eliciting a shriek from Maddie when he got in the way of her watching her pony cartoon—and coming over to lean against the table. “Can I have a juice box?”

I sighed and passed the bottle into Everett’s grabby hands, then somehow managed to stick the straw into a juice box for Andy with one hand. I shouldn’t have been giving him juice in the middle of the morning when lunch was just around the corner, but drastic times called for—

Fuck! I was so frazzled that I was repeating myself.

“Drastic means there’s no other way around it, sweetheart,” I said, handing off the juice box, then smoothing my hand over Andy’s soft hair.

“Okay,” Andy said, unbothered, then headed back to the sofa.

Maddie saw that he’d been given a juice box and blurted, “Me! Juice, Papa!”

“Okay, sweetie, you can have one too,” I said, breathless and riled up.

I popped another straw into a box—Everett dropped his bottle as I did, and I had to bend over to pick that up—then handed the box to Maddie when she scrambled over to me.
