After we leave the restaurant, we walk to the SUV where I ask Adam to drive so I donât give in to the near overwhelming desire to follow Theresa to Connecticut. He nods, and then drags his keys out of his front pocket. He doesnât say a word, but he knows watching her leave tore me up. The ride back to Melrose is quiet, and I need the silence to get my head back in the game.
As soon as Adam and I pull in the driveway, our next-door neighbor, Edwin, a retired comptroller, comes across his yard and says with urgency, âA very muscular, rather tall Hispanic man was at your front door a couple of hours ago. He knocked a few times and did something on his phone before he got in his car and drove away. I didnât have time to write down the license plate number, but Iâd recognize him and the car if I see him again.â
Well, shit. They should give Edwin an assignment. Instead of watching them, keep an eye on the Russians across the street. âThanks, man, but thatâs our friend Ernesto. We crossed wires and missed each other.â
Edwin looks disappointed there isnât some espionage involved. This is what happens when too many people watch Jack Ryan and Bosch. âOkay then. Have a good evening.â Edwin walks off with slumped shoulders and heads into his house.
The âsomething on his phoneâ is the reason why we left Boston. Fernando, now known as Ernesto, has drive-by duty, and he knocked to communicate to Cam, now known as Simon, who is on duty in the house, that we were on our way back. I hate these fuckinâ undercover names.
Intentionally, weâre keeping communication low tech whenever possible. Fernandoâs text to Adam was in code, and weâre using our phones sparingly. We tell all the newbies, watching The Wire is like required reading for coursework.
Once inside, we head upstairs where weâve set up shop. The side window of the master bedroom gives us a clear shot of the Russiansâ house. Behind dark curtains with cutouts where surveillance cameras are embedded, no one could guess what weâre doing or that we have a mini control center in this room.
Cam looks up from the monitors and gives us a chin lift.
âAnything?â Adam asks.
âQuiet day,â Cam says. âThe two who troll the clubs went out to get food, and came back about a half hour ago. Otherwise, nothing.â
âDamn, I wish we had ears inside,â I mutter.
âWe need to catch one of those fuckers dropping a roofie in a girlâs drink, and get him to roll. Then weâll get our wire.â
âWe pick up any of them, the whole house decamps and scatters,â Adam says. âThey donât care what happens to their âcolleagues.â Itâs all about making bank. And to do that, they need to dope and rope.â
âCold muthafuckas.â Cam stands and stretches, then says, âIâm gonna eat, chill, and catch some Zs. Iâll be back on at midnight.â
âRight,â I say. âIâll take next shift.
