The echoing boom cracked and shook his whole body. Hoss gasped as he sprang upright reaching for his hip, but there was no gun there. No threat either, he realized, as he shivered in the cool air. Rain teemed in through the half-open door where the curtain was thrust inward by the force of it. He crossed the damp tiles and slid the door shut as a flash of white lit up the room. Unable to get in now, heavy raindrops flung against the glass pane and slid down it defeated to add to the expanding pool on the balcony floor.

He checked his watch. Quarter to one. Another forty-five minutes till he was due to meet Calum, but not enough time to go back to sleep. He had slept heavy and his clothes were wrinkled and grubby, a light headache throbbed between his eyes. He pressed at the spot with his thumb as he took his gun from the bedside table and crossed to the bathroom to take a shower.

When he stepped back into the room fifteen minutes later, the rain still pattered against the window but the thunderstorm had passed over. He pulled on fresh jeans and a t-shirt, ran a belt through the loops and clipped the Shield in its holster onto the leather. He hooked his t-shirt behind the pistol, but dropped the gray hoody he put on over the top of both. He clipped a spare magazine to the back of the belt in case things got really nasty and folded a couple of zip ties to push down into his front pocket.

Though he knew Fletch would be asleep by now, he tapped out the address he was heading to and pressed send. If he disappeared, at least she’d know where to start looking. He put the phone on mute and into the inside pocket of his thin rain jacket, which he zipped up over the hoody. Then he double checked he had everything before heading out of the apartment at one fifteen.

As he stepped back out into the street, Hoss pulled up the hoods of both the hoody and the rain jacket. There were still a few people milling around, stumbling their way back to their hotels or to the next venue, stiletto heels rushing and scraping over wet concrete. It made it hard to be sure no one was following him, but he was vigilant all the same. He glanced at the shop reflections as he passed and trotted across the road once or twice, even slipping down a side street he hoped would be a short cut and not a dead end. He saw nothing obvious and was sure he was alone.

The Clearwater was a whitewashed building with blue-glassed balconies twelve stories high. Hoss wondered if this was a temporary stop for Calum or whether he felt at home here among the tourists and sunshine seekers. Had Simon felt at home before it all went wrong?

There was no concierge on the door and the reception was unmanned.
