TWENTY-SEVEN
Back then
âI feel like shit,â the patient said.
âThatâs because youâre dying, remember?â the doctor said. âSix to twelve months, I said.â
âWhen you stop giving me whatever it is that makes me look like a sick hundred-year-old man, then I intend to live a full life, Doc.â
âIâm going to give you a course of drugs that will start to counteract the effects of the drugs I gave you. Itâs going to take a little while to reverse it. A nurse will come in and sheâll have to see you sick, then itâs up to you whether you want her back. Tell her youâre going to live in Cornwall, if you like. Or Golspie. Sheâll visit you once, which will be tomorrow, then itâs up to you. She wonât question it.â
The doctor took a syringe out and held it up, squirting some of the liquid into the air.
âYou know,â the patient said, âyou could be giving me liquid vitamins for all I know. You could let me die and then youâd be free and clear. You got your revenge and you could walk away.â
âFirst of all, I wouldnât do that. Iâm a man of my word. Plus, youâre going to help me with that other project, you said.â
The patient grinned and then coughed. âI am. And Iâm looking forward to it.â
âSo am I.â The doctorâs eyes glazed over for a moment. His mind was elsewhere, going back years. It had been a long time since heâd thought about Cormack, and he felt guilty every time he did think of his son and realised how long it had been.
The patient was lying in bed, his face gaunt, his eyes red. If he hadnât known better, the doctor would have thought this man really did only have a few months left to live. He put the needle in the manâs arm and pressed the plunger. This was going to take a little time, but the patient would be back on his feet in no time and the first part of their plan would be finished. Then it would be on to stage two.
âAre you comfortable here? In this flat?â
âI am. Itâs not being used just now and nobody will question it. I have a lot of friends, Doctor, and one of them very kindly found this place for me. The owner wonât be back for a while.â
âThatâs good. You rest now, and Iâll have somebody come in and check on you later, then Iâll be back. Youâre on the uphill road to recovery now.â
The patient smiled. âThanks, Doc. I promise you youâre going to feel even better than you did the first time when we hanged that bastard. This is going to be up close and personal.â
The doctor smiled. This was going against everything he stood for, the Hippocratic Oath, everything. But he didnât care. When he was on his knees in front of his little boyâs grave, he shed tears of sorrow and anger, thinking he would never get the chance to make the hurt go away.
