TWENTY-SEVEN

Back then

‘I feel like shit,’ the patient said.

‘That’s because you’re dying, remember?’ the doctor said. ‘Six to twelve months, I said.’

‘When you stop giving me whatever it is that makes me look like a sick hundred-year-old man, then I intend to live a full life, Doc.’

‘I’m going to give you a course of drugs that will start to counteract the effects of the drugs I gave you. It’s going to take a little while to reverse it. A nurse will come in and she’ll have to see you sick, then it’s up to you whether you want her back. Tell her you’re going to live in Cornwall, if you like. Or Golspie. She’ll visit you once, which will be tomorrow, then it’s up to you. She won’t question it.’

The doctor took a syringe out and held it up, squirting some of the liquid into the air.

‘You know,’ the patient said, ‘you could be giving me liquid vitamins for all I know. You could let me die and then you’d be free and clear. You got your revenge and you could walk away.’

‘First of all, I wouldn’t do that. I’m a man of my word. Plus, you’re going to help me with that other project, you said.’

The patient grinned and then coughed. ‘I am. And I’m looking forward to it.’

‘So am I.’ The doctor’s eyes glazed over for a moment. His mind was elsewhere, going back years. It had been a long time since he’d thought about Cormack, and he felt guilty every time he did think of his son and realised how long it had been.

The patient was lying in bed, his face gaunt, his eyes red. If he hadn’t known better, the doctor would have thought this man really did only have a few months left to live. He put the needle in the man’s arm and pressed the plunger. This was going to take a little time, but the patient would be back on his feet in no time and the first part of their plan would be finished. Then it would be on to stage two.

‘Are you comfortable here? In this flat?’

‘I am. It’s not being used just now and nobody will question it. I have a lot of friends, Doctor, and one of them very kindly found this place for me. The owner won’t be back for a while.’

‘That’s good. You rest now, and I’ll have somebody come in and check on you later, then I’ll be back. You’re on the uphill road to recovery now.’

The patient smiled. ‘Thanks, Doc. I promise you you’re going to feel even better than you did the first time when we hanged that bastard. This is going to be up close and personal.’

The doctor smiled. This was going against everything he stood for, the Hippocratic Oath, everything. But he didn’t care. When he was on his knees in front of his little boy’s grave, he shed tears of sorrow and anger, thinking he would never get the chance to make the hurt go away.
