‘You don’t look very happy,’ Guillory said when he got off the phone.

‘We’ve been told to drop it.’

She smiled despite his obvious irritation.

‘I believe your unsympathetic reply would be, welcome to my world. The world of idiots in senior positions following their own agendas and telling you what to do. Anyway, drop what? We’ve done what we came to do. It wasn’t a happy ending, but hey, ho.’

‘You don’t think they’d like to know if Freya was in on it with her brother?’

‘I’m sure they would. Maybe things are in motion to try to determine that at this very moment. Just not with our participation.’

He shook his head, frustration and confusion in his voice.

‘I can’t believe you can switch off like that.’

‘I’m paid to do as I’m told. You get used to it. What is it you didn’t want to drop, anyway?’

‘The Lakenheath angle.’

She nodded, a big long stroke that made her look a bit like a horse.

‘It’s been promoted to an angle now, has it?’

He gave up as a text came in from Chandler with the details of the clinic and the appointment he’d set up. It gave him something else to complain about.

‘That’s not all.’

‘I heard you say about a DNA test. It’s hardly surprising.’

‘He wants us to take her to an appointment he’s already set up.’

She took a deep breath. Shook her head as she let it out, reinforcing the horse similarity. There was frustration in her own voice now.

‘He’s a lawyer, for Christ’s sake. He works for a rich, demanding old man. He thinks ahead. I know that’s a difficult concept for you to grasp.’ She tapped her breastbone with her finger. ‘I’d have been surprised if he hadn’t set it up.’

She was right. Didn’t mean he had to like it.

‘You want to handle it? Go back to Freya, pretend we didn’t as good as run away yesterday without telling her how we just caught her brother and handed him over to the police for killing her husband. And by the way, stop sniveling and get your legs open, we’re taking a tissue sample. Deep breath, my hands are cold.’

She looked at him a long while. Trying so very hard not to smile, even if her eyes refused to play ball.

‘Maybe I will take the lead, after all, Dr. Buckley.’
