Billie lifted her hand, placed it on her chest, and then leaned against the wall outside of his bedchamber. She couldnât believe sheâd walked in on him while he bathed⦠Not once had she considered that he might have risen from his sickbed. Heâd still seemed so ill the last time sheâd been in his company the day before. She didnât continue to sit by his bedside as she had earlier in his illness. He didnât require help as he had before.
Sheâd made a grave error. Now she had the image of his nakedness marked forever in her mind. She would never be able to shake it away. Her imagination would never have done him justice. He was perfection. His skin was still a little pale from being sick, but other than thatâ¦he was gorgeous. Rippled muscles on top of muscles and all lean, sleek, edges. Being near him had always made her heart race. Nowâ¦it was so uncontrollable she feared it would never beat regularly again.
âWhat are you doing?â her sister, Chris, asked. âDid the duke yell at you again?â She lifted her chin in defiance. âSomeone should put him in his place.â
âWe can do it for you,â Carly offered. âIt would be our pleasure.â
There was a wicked gleam to Carlyâs gaze that put Billie on edge. It was the last thing she needed. The twins could be terrors at times. She had to put an end to their scheming before they did something they would all come to regret. âYou will do no such thing,â she ordered. âWe are dependent on the dukeâs generosity. He might be a bitâ¦difficultâ¦at times, but he isnât as bad as the two of you think he is.â At least Billie didnât believe so. âHeâs a decent man.â Who had mostly kept his hands to himself. That one kiss didnât count. Especially since sheâd liked it and part of her wished heâd do it again. Even though sheâd asked him not to. Billie was being so contrary⦠âWe need to stay here.â Or the Dower House⦠âWe are poor, or did you forget that?â
Chris wrinkled her nose. âYouâre not poor. You married that old lecher and there has to be something left to you.â
âNot enough to support five people.â Billie sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. She prayed for patience as she always did when dealing with the twins. She lowered her hand and met Chrisâs, then Carlyâs gazes. âPromise me you wonât do something foolish.â
Carly held up her hand. âI solemnly promise not to do anything intentionally foolish.â
âMe too,â Chris said, then smirked.
God help her. She didnât believe them, but for the moment it would have to suffice. âI have to find Teddy and speak to her. Go find something to entertain yourselves with.â
âOh, we will,â Carly said. âWe always do.â With those words the two of them rushed down the hall and down the stairs. Billie followed behind them and went in search of Teddy. She needed advice, and her more sensible sister might have something sage to offer her.
