Chapter 19 â A Sortie from the Knight Errant
Dobbs usually slept like a little child, but something within him had been ignited by Neptuneâs matchmaking, and he found it impossible to calm his mind. It rattled on with pictures and words and scenarios; it would not let him rest. When he heard a tapping on the window next to his cot, he responded immediately, and he wasnât even surprised to see Venus standing outside looking in at him. It was meant to be.
He went to her, barefooted, barechested, wearing only the thin pajama bottoms he had borrowed from Sandy, because at the last minute he decided that sleeping in the nude just wasnât right in a dormitory-type situation.
Reaching for Venus, he found their joining intensely natural. Inevitable. But before he could enfold her, she moved back and told him to get some shoes on, she needed to talk to him, and not here.
He seemed to understand, but Elizabeth was doubtful that he had the right idea.
âLetâs go down by the river,â he said before he left her, âget away from the compound entirely. Iâll take you to where I had my talk with Sandy this morning. The path is right next to us, between the menâs dorm and the farmhouse.â
Elizabeth tried to control herself. âIâve just had a close encounter with a dead jellyfish, Iâm wearing flip-flops, I just walked all the way across the quadrangle to get here, hoping all the way that I didnât step on anything that would turn around and bite, and Iâm not going back to get my combat boots on so I can kick frogs out of the way while we stroll on down to the riverbank. In fact, the nearest thing I have to boots is still in my car, and Iâm not walking through the path to the parking lot, either. Weâre going into the Hall. They donât keep it locked at night.â
Willing to leap off a cliff for her at any time of the day, but especially at the magic hour of midnight, which was fast approaching, Dobbs complied wordlessly. Even when sheâd mentioned a dead jellyfish he hadnât interrupted, mostly because of her tone of voice. It implied that at the slightest provocation, she was going to start screaming.
Elizabeth waited for him impatiently in the dark, trying to get her thoughts together and keeping a sharp lookout for things crawling around her feet.

âYou didnât say whether or not I needed to put a shirt on too,â Dobbs said primly as he walked her to the Hall. Heâd had enough time to feel hurt. After all, she was the one who had gotten him out of bed in the middle of the night. What was a guy supposed to think? Then when he reaches for her, she gets all frosty and tells him to put some shoes on. Real nice.
Heâd also pulled on a dark tee shirt, feeling as if he needed to cover his dignity somehow.
Throwing out more mixed signals, Venus put her arm around him and apologized.
