Once the meeting broke up, Millard brought Ilona, Humbolt and Meitner to his office, where he ordered a luncheon from one of his assistants.
âItâs a cheerful afternoon,â he said, gesturing to the sunlit balcony beyond his officeâs sweeping windows. âWhy donât we eat outside?â
From the expression on the manâs face, Ilona got the impression that Millard felt they could talk more freely outside, without anyone possibly eavesdropping.
Once they were seated in the warm sunshine around a circular table with their lunches before them, Millard said, âYou got a glimpse of what Iâm facing.â
Humbolt reached for a slice of bread as he said, âThey sure donât look enthusiastic.â
âTheyâre frightened,â said Millard. âYouâve brought them news that they donât want to hear.â
âDarbin kept them in line, though.â
Millard smiled grimly. âDarbin has seen to it that you wonât be here to plead your case. I imagine heâs half hoping that youâll break your necks while youâre out at Neptune.â
Ilona felt her brows knitting. âReally. A man may smile and smile and still be a villain.â
Meitner stared at Millard. âYou donât really think heâll sabotage our ship, do you?â
âOf course not. But if anything goes wrong with your vessel while youâre alone out there, Iâm sure Darbin wonât shed too many tears.â
âBut the problem will still exist!â Ilona insisted. âKilling us wonât solve anything.â
Millard carefully put down his fork and replied, âIf itâs been two million years since the aliens left our solar system, what are the chances that theyâll return while Darbin and his entire generation are still living?â
No one answered.
Breaking the silence, Millard said, âIâve found that a good deal of politics consists of sweeping problems under the rug and leaving them for future generations to deal with.â
Still none of them had a response to offer.
