Chapter 10

(Cal’s Point of View)

Since the moment I was born, destiny has been placing moments before me as if nudging me along a path of acceptance to claim my birthright. No matter how hard I’ve tried to push who and what I am to the side, fate never lets me forget I’m the son of Hell. There have been times in my life when I feel as though I’m being punished for my birth mother’s sins, and this is one of those moments. Knowing that my child is trapped here in the Void makes me wonder if his ties to this place are as strong as mine. I hope not. I pray I can sever whatever connection he might have to it before the forces here can ensnare him and swallow him whole.

As Caleb and I run up the stairs to find Rose, I realize I’m being a complete idiot. Halfway up, I stop, turn to face Caleb, grab one of his arms, and begin phasing us to different rooms inside the castle to figure out where she’s being kept. After the tenth phase, Caleb pulls himself free of my grasp and drops to his knees to throw up all over the red carpet in the bedroom we’re standing in.

“Are you sick or something?” I ask, becoming annoyed at the unnecessary delay he’s causing in our search.

He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and attempts to stand on wobbly legs. When he slips and almost falls into his own vomit, I grab a fistful of his shirt and yank him back onto his feet, prevent him from making a mess of himself.

“I’m not used to phasing so many times in a row,” he says.

His excuse seems like a flimsy one to me considering who and what he is.

“Your Abaddon’s child,” I say. “Phasing shouldn’t bother you. I know you’re not powerful enough to phase here, but didn’t you do it while you were in the living world?”

“I tried to do it, but I failed a lot.” Caleb looks ashamed to admit such a thing to me. “I guess it doesn’t exactly come naturally to everyone. Rose was good at it though. It seemed like she could go anywhere she wanted to as long as she had physically been there first. That limitation always annoyed her.”

I hadn’t really thought about Caleb and Rose having the ability to phase at the academy until now, but it does bring up some interesting questions.

“Is she the one who put the snake in Lora’s room?” I ask.

Caleb shakes his head and looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. “How can you even think Rose would do something so cruel? I thought you knew her better than that. Neither of us knows who put that snake there.”

“If it wasn’t either of you, then that really only leaves one other person, doesn’t it?” I can’t prevent the contempt in my voice any more than I can hold back the urgency I feel to find Rose and the baby as quickly as possible.
